Sustainable Interiors: Harnessing the Power of Natural Materials
As a socially responsible interior designer it is our duty to make the
maximum use of natural materials when it comes to finishing the products designed. Natural
materials can be used for interior design to create a more environmentally conscious and
healthier living space . Natural materials are matured materials which are obtained through
natural resources and in which minimum manual intervention is used. Natural materials also
reduce carbon footprints. Some of my widely used natural materials are As follows
1. One such most widely used natural material is wood wood is a versatile material that can
be used for furniture walls floorings and ceilings full wood is warmed durable and it comes
in a variety of colours and textures hence making it a suitable product for a wider range of
applications.
2. Stone:Stone is another durable and elegant material that can add unique textures and
sophistications to bowl and counter tops. Generally stones which are locally available can
be used to enhance the look of the spaces which are being designed. Stone is extensively
used as an exterior material also as it is resistant to anywhere and tear and weather
conditions.
3. Natural plaster: Natural plaster is an eco friendly material that can be made from clay,
lime stone ,dust and other natural fibres natural plaster can be used to create an earthy
tone and is available in a variety of colours And textures.
4. Cork : Cork is a sustainable and eco friendly material that is fine and moisture
resistant hypoallergenic and impermeable to liquids and gases.
5. Rattan and wicker : Rattan and Wicker are 2 materials that are back in trend. Both are
sustainable materials that are extracted from fast growing plants and are commonly used for
weaving and making furniture. Nowadays we also have rattan and Wicker sheets which are
extensively used in cupboards and other furnitures as well .
6. Bamboo: Bamboo is a sustainable material that is antibacterial Wicks away moisture and is
unlikely to cause any kind of allergic reactions.
7. Clay: Clay is again an eco friendly material that is recyclable and abundant making it a
sustainable choice. Clay walls can provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Apart from these materials while we are selecting our finishing materials we should also
take care that we should try and use the materials which are recyclable in order to make it
eco friendly.
